Examiners for the 2022 Examinations Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied and Junior Cycle

lc examiners 2022

The SEC continues to recruit examiners to mark the work of students sitting the Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied and Junior Cycle examinations this summer.

Teachers are the lifeblood of the national examinations system and the SEC relies on their involvement in the marking of the examinations for the benefit of individual students, the education system and society in general.

The continues to be a shortfall in the number of applications for examining roles and with increased candidature this year there is a further requirement for increased numbers of examiners.

The SEC has stepped up its recruitment campaign in recent weeks with the support of stakeholders including management bodies, subject associations, and teacher unions. An advertisement and video has been produced, highlighting the benefits of becoming an examiner and encouraging teachers to apply. These can be viewed on the recruitment page of our website here. The theme of the campaign is EARN, LEARN, UNDERSTAND which highlights that there are professional and financial benefits for teachers undertaking work on the state examinations.

Financial enhancements which have been taken to encourage teachers to apply for examiner roles include a satisfactory completion of marking fee which recognises the cooperation, flexibility and support needed in the delivery of the examinations.  All Leaving Certificate subjects will attract an additional €6 per script on top of the normal script rate and Junior Cycle subjects an additional €3 per script on top of the normal script rates. This represents an increase of between 17% and up to 50% per script at Leaving Certificate and an increase of between 48% and up to 57% per script at Junior Cycle depending on the subject specific rate.

At Leaving Certificate we are targeting our ongoing recruitment efforts in the following subjects;
  • English
  • Irish
  • Mathematics
  • History
  • Geography
  • Physical Education
  • Art
  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Business
  • Biology
  • Agricultural Science

At Junior Cycle, we continue to require examiners in all subjects. Applications will be considered from PME Year 1 students for marking at Junior Cycle.

In line with recruitment practice,  SEC will continue to recruit examiners and will be appointing examiners to mark examinations right up to the start of the marking conferences in order to fill vacancies and in response to examiners dropping out for a variety of reasons.

The SEC is appealing to teachers to consider becoming an examiner and to undertake this vital work on the 2022 state examinations.
