25TRA065 How to Teach Dyslexics and Struggling Readers Through Structured Literacy (SL)
Dates: Mondays 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th February 2025
Times: 7 - 8.30 pm
Venue: Online via Zoom
Target Audience: This course is designed for primary level teachers, and specifically SETs, and covers the Primary Language Curriculum Learning Outcomes (LO) for the Reading (LO 3,4,5 & 6) and Writing strands (LO 3,4 & 5). However, teachers at all levels who have struggling readers in their class, will find it instructive and helpful in teaching students to read.
Participants who complete this course will be able to teach individuals and small groups how to read through structured literacy. Furthermore, they will be competent in teaching children to spell through structure, adhering to spelling rules. They will also be able to fully engage with colleagues and contribute to designing and implementing school literacy strategies. Finally, and most importantly, they will be able to teach severely dyslexic children to read and spell.
Over the four nights Mary will demonstrate how to use the DcodeDyslexia(Dcode) Programme to teach the five pillars of literacy: phonological awareness; phonics; fluency; vocabulary; comprehension. This will highlight the common misconception that SL is just phonics, and assert: Structured Literacy is much more than phonics!
Bio of Presenter: Mary Moran
Mary Moran has been working closely with struggling readers for almost four decades. She was trained to use the Orton Gillingham approach in the 1980’s and has been teaching privately since, having, at a conservative estimate, taught over 1500 students at all school going ages. In 2022 she designed and wrote a unique structured literacy programme, i.e., the DcodeDyslexia (Dcode) programme, which employs all the techniques and methods she has used with great success as a dyslexia tutor.
