SLT Supports for Autistic Pupils

Session 1 - Understanding Autistic Communication
In this session, Amy will explore the nuances of Autistic communication using a Neurodiversity affirming lens. Amy will cover the communication strengths & challenges in the autistic population and in this session, you will begin to create a 'Communication Profile' for each of your students, which you will build on over the 3 part series. Amy will provide practical ideas, along with strategies and ideas for maximising success in supporting your autistic students' communication in the classroom

Session 2 - Supporting non/minimally speaking students (AAC)
In this workshop, Amy will discuss using a Total Communication approach to support your students in using Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems. With many students presenting with a need for AAC support, Amy will discuss how you can learn more about AAC, who it is suitable for and how to get started in the classroom, including free classroom resources. Amy will explain all forms of AAC, from Lámh to high tech AAC systems such as iPads and TD Snap. Learn practical Neurodiversity Affirming strategies and gain confidence to support all AAC users.

Session 3 - Creating the Neurodiversity affirming classroom
In this session, Amy will provide a practical, up to date informative webinar on the history of ND affirming practice and its impact on how we connect with autistic pupils. Amy will provide practical resources that are in line with the ND affirming approach, which you can easily incorporate into your classwide resources. You will learn how to create a 'Classroom Audit' which is a practical guide to ensure you have a tool to help you follow to implement the ideas we will discuss. You will finalise your 'Communication Profile' and use this tool alongside your 'Classroom Audit' to create useful guides for you to use in your classroom.
