Did you know that there is an important Viking burial site in Kerry? Cloghermore Cave, near Tralee, County Kerry was excavated 25 years ago and is now a National Monument. Archaeologist found more than 350 Viking objects, including hack silver, fragments of a shield boss and weapons, combs, amber beads, spindle whorls and even some gaming pieces from a Viking board game called Hnefetafl. These objects are part of Kerry County Museum’s collections and some of the most important artefacts are on permanent display. Kerry County Museum has invited archaeologist Francesca Callaghan, an expert in Viking Age Kerry and Heritage in School Specialist with the Heritage Council, to bring Kerry’s Viking past to life in this interactive webinar. Francesca will use her own living history display based on the finds from Cloghermore Cave and other Viking sites across Ireland to tell the story of Kerry in the Viking Age. Pupils will learn what life was like as a Viking child growing up in Ireland over 1000 years ago. Francesca will finish with a fun Viking quiz and there will be a Q&A session at the end.
