The Science of Reading and Assessments

What does the science of reading tell us about assessments? There are linked predictive relationships between assessment measures and literacy outcomes. Learn what to screen for and how to monitor progress following a diagnostic road map that varies by age span. Practice utilizing a spelling inventory will also be included.

The Science of Reading and Text Reading

What does the science of reading tell us about the use of decodable and leveled texts? It matters what kinds of texts are used, when they are used, and how they are used. Learn more about how our use of texts may vary by age span and phonic patterns learned.

The Science of Reading and Differentiated Small Group Instruction

What does the science of reading tell us about small vs whole group instruction? Learn how to make the best use of whole group instructional time and also prioritize differentiated small group instructional time with a teacher. Accessible literacy center activities and routines will also be featured.

The Science of Reading and Targeting Instruction for Striving Readers

What does the science of reading tell us about targeting instruction for striving readers? Learn how to make decisions about what area(s) to target, how to best scaffold instruction, and how to expedite progress

Bio of Presenter: Lauren Walsh (@FUNemic_Awareness, @FunWithLiteracy, @LitLeaderLauren)

Lauren Walsh is a certified literacy specialist who develops educators' knowledge of effective literacy instruction at the local, national, and international level. She has had the honor of working as a kindergarten, 2nd grade and 3rd grade teacher, reading intervention specialist, literacy and language coach, adjunct assistant professor for USC’s Reading and Literacy Added Authorization program, and facilitator for AIM Institute’s Pathways to Proficient Reading.  Currently Lauren is working as a Literacy Specialist for Heggerty Phonemic Awareness.  She also created Read.Inspire.Learn to customize professional development in all aspects of literacy instruction.  Lauren is proud to serve on California Department of Education’s State Literacy Team where she developed professional development resources to be shared statewide.  Lauren is also a certified dance fitness instructor and has a passion to engage her “students” (both children and adults) through performance and movement to get them excited about the essential components of reading.  She lives in Agoura Hills, California with her husband and their two daughters who love dance parties and "reading with their ears" as much as she does.
