HSE Social Inclusion Psychology in partnership with South West Counselling and Tralee Education Support Centre are inviting you to apply for one day training event. This training is being delivered by National experts in the area of trauma who have extensive expertise working with forced migrants with facilitated discussion group supported by psychologists.

Who is this training for?
Anyone working in an education setting (Primary, Secondary or Youth reach services) who is working with / providing an education to children and young people seeking International protection / asylum. This training is open to anyone who engages with refugees and asylum seekers including teachers, SNAs, principals, administrative staff and / or school caretaking staff. This training is relevant for staff supporting asylum seekers and refugees regardless of origin including Ukrainian, Syrian, Afghani, Iraqi, Georgian, Ethiopian, DRC and other areas.

Learning Goals:

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from one another and to gain an understanding of:

• Refugee Journey
• Mental Health and Psychosocial Needs
• Barriers to adjustment and integration
• When and where to seek help for trauma
• Importance of being trauma sensitive in Education
• Practical steps school can take to be trauma sensitive and assist student

Structure of the Day
This day long training event provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the refugee journey, the needs of children and young people seeking International protection and what it means to be trauma sensitive in a school setting in the context of these students. The day will include presentations of the latest theory and research in this area and facilitated discussions to support those in attendance to develop and share ideas on practical steps that can be taken in an education setting to be more trauma sensitive. The day will also afford an opportunity for those in attendance to obtain information on relevant supports and services and share ideas on helpful strategies used by schools to meet the needs of students.

Trainers / Facilitators
The trainers are experts in the field of trauma and PTSD in the context of forced migration and are at the cutting edge of service provision for those seeking International Protection in Ireland and will also include psychologists with extensive experience in the provision of a range of psychological supports in a school setting.

Dr. Jennifer Hayes, Principal Psychology Manager for Social Inclusion in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare
Dr. Jennifer Hayes is Principal Psychology Manager for Social Inclusion in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. She is a qualified clinical psychologist and a counselling psychologist and has supported children, adults and families across multiple services in the HSE for almost 20 years. Over the last number of years she has worked extensively with Syrian and Iraqi war survivors living in Ireland as part of the Resettlement Project. Her area of clinical expertise is trauma, PTSD and supporting people who have fled war and persecution are resettling in Ireland.

Dr Marie Claire O’Brien, Senior Clinical Psychologist for Social Inclusion in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare
Dr Marie Claire O’Brien is a Senior Clinical Psychologist for Social Inclusion in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare and is based in Tralee. She is a qualified clinical psychologist and a clinical neuropsychologist. Dr O’Brien has extensive experience in supporting adults, children and families with trauma and PTSD across a range of services in the UK and Ireland. She also an associate lecturer in clinical neuropsychology and lectures on relevant topics such as cultural factors in clinical assessment and working with interpreters.
