ARC (Aquaculture Remote Classroom)
The Aquaculture Remote Classroom is a Bord Iascaigh Mhara initiative aimed at students to raise their awareness of aquaculture. Aquaculture is the farming of plants and animals in the water. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector and a world leader in sustainable food production despite only 2% of the oceans used for farming. Up to March 2020 the ARC travelled around Ireland visiting schools and delivering aquaculture workshops from inside a mobile truck. Literally a classroom on wheels! Today, the programme is delivered 100% online via short education videos, interactive quizzes, and webinars. The best part about the ARC for schools is that its educational, the workshop content has been carefully crafted and designed to align with a number of curriculum strands. A memorable experience for teachers and students alike. The webinars are free.
What we will cover in the webinar is as follows:
- The origins of seafood
- The role of Aquaculture on a global scale
- The role of Aquaculture on a local level
- The role of Aquaculture on a personal level (health & nutrition)
The ARC is part of an EU project, ‘Farmed in the EU’, that has been funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Operational Programme, which simply means, it is completely free of charge for schools.
All of this is hosted by Aine-lisa Shannon, a marine biologist and Áine O’Donnell, a nutritional and health expert. Aine-lisa and Áine bring great enthusiasm to the ARC and both are Garda vetted and have completed Child protection training.
