The Single Text is one of the more challenging components of the Senior Cycle English Syllabus. As most teachers opt to choose a Shakespearean text, students are contending not only with a lengthy plot and a multitude of characters but also with a language that can prove challenging.
In this webinar, Claire will provide practical advice on how best to approach the Shakespearean Single Text, including:
- Guidance on how to contextualise Shakespeare for your students
- Methodologies that support the reading/learning of the texts in the classroom
- Particular focus on Hamlet and King Lear as currently relevant
- Guidance on the teaching of key themes, language and imagery and characterisation
- A breakdown of past exam questions
- Guidance on how to approach reinforcing quotation
- Sample answers and presentations
Bio of Presenter: Claire Cotter

Claire Cotter is an English and History Teacher in Christian Brothers College Cork, where she also works as the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator. She holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations and is currently studying for a Masters in Education in University College, Cork. She runs the website Ms Cotter’s Class where she posts notes for English, History and SEN.
