The last five years have seen major changes in the curriculum for physical education across post-primary schooling. During this period Leaving Certificate PE was introduced for the first time and a Senior Cycle PE Framework was developed. At junior cycle, updated Wellbeing Guidelines were introduced and a new 135 hour PE programme will be rolled out in schools from Sept 2023. This webinar will provide an overview of these curriculum developments and offer suggestions for schools seeking to implement the new syllabi.
Elaine Murtagh
Elaine Murtagh is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education at the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS), University of Limerick. She is currently Course Director for the BSc Physical Education programme and also teaches on the PME physical education programme. Her research interests are in physical education, physical activity and health. She is particularly interested in understanding and enhancing physical activity experiences for children and adolescents. Elaine is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the World Health Organisation’s European network for the promotion of Health-Enhancing Physical Activity. https://www.ul.ie/research/dr-elaine-murtagh
Aron O’Donnell
Aron O’Donnell is a Physical Education Teacher at Rice College, Ennis. He has over 10 years’ experience teaching physical education in Ireland and the UK. Aron also has experience delivering the BSc Physical Education programme for pre-service teachers at the University of Limerick. He holds a BA (Hons) Secondary Physical Education and Sport from Liverpool John Moores University . Aron has completed a range of relevant qualifications, including: Instructor Developer Assessor and Instructor Developer with Sport Ireland, FA Football Level 2, Rugby Ready Certificate, Rugby Union Level 1, IRFU Rugby Union Stage 2, Qualified Surf Instructor Level 2, Qualified Snowboard Instructor, Qualified Beach Lifeguard, Qualified in Life Support 3.
