Community of Practice – Assistive Technology for UDL (second level teachers)
Universal Design for Learning aims to maximise inclusion and participation of students by providing flexibility and choice in learning and assessment methods. A variety of “assistive” technologies are freely available to enhance the reading and writing experiences of students, including those with disabilities and these can be a key part of a UDL approach. However, integrating technological options for students is a complex process with challenges including selection and provision of software and devices, guidance and training for students, classroom management and others.
This community of practice is being established to support second level teachers interested in using technology as part of a fully inclusive UDL approach in their classrooms.
Who should join?
Subject teachers and SEN teachers at second level who are interested in seriously pursuing UDL using assistive technology. This will be a closed group, limited to 10 teachers, meeting three times per year online.
How will it work?
The group will provide a space for peer supported learning and sharing of experiences. Members will be encouraged to experiment with new technology in their own classrooms and to bring their challenges and successes back to the community. Group members may choose to document and disseminate their experiences but this will be entirely by individual choice.
What time commitment is involved?
Community members are asked to commit to attending 3 online evening meetings per year and to carrying out some experimentation in their own classrooms. Further involvement such as participating in discussion on social media and preparing materials for dissemination are optional.
What’s in it for me?
In addition to your own professional development in a very current and positive educational direction, you will develop networks with like-minded colleagues across the county and contribute to the improvement of the educational experience of all students. Within your school, you will contribute to the digital learning strategy and to the inclusive education framework.
Members of the group may choose to document their learning and to disseminate this at relevant conferences and other forums.
