I hope you and your staff had a good summer break and a well-deserved rest.

As you are aware NEPS operates a system of planning work with schools at the beginning of each academic year. This year we are completing our planning process in two parts.

The first part will be a presentation delivered to groups of schools and will take place in the Tralee Education Centre. We are very aware that the educational context in which you are working is changing and this meeting will give information about how you can make the make the most effective use of your NEPS service.  We will provide information on NEPS model of service, offer some guidelines for prioritising pupils for NEPS involvement and outline the role of NEPS in the context of the new model of special education resourcing (TAM).

Each school is invited to send two nominees from senior management and/or teachers
with SEN responsibility.  The details for your school's group planning meeting are as follows:

Epilepsy Awareness

Epilepsy Ireland will host an Information Evening for teachers and Special needs assistants at the Education centre in Tralee on Monday 25th  September from 4.30pm to 6pm. Community Resource Officer, Kathryn Foley will speak about epilepsy related issues in school, including types of seizures, first aid, triggers, activities and how to handle seizures in the school environment.

This event is suitable for all staff dealing with students with epilepsy in both primary and secondary schools.

Biology exam paper review will be held at the Tralee Education centre on Thursday 21st at 7pm

Rory Geoghegan will be giving a presentation on Earth and Space on Thursday 28th of September at 7pm.The presentation will cover the topics of space, celestial bodies, planetary systems, gravity, space exploration, the scale of the solar system, galaxies, the Big Bang, etc. 

Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss models (commercial and home made) available to teach this strand. The session will include plenty of good teaching ideas.

The course is a practical, hands - on week of learning in the beautiful setting of Gortbrack Organic Farm, Ballyseedy, Tralee.  Elements covered include planning and designing the Living Classroom, basic gardening skills, outdoor classroom management and linking the formal and informal Curriculum within the Living Classroom.

The objective of the course is to introduce teachers to the concept of using the school grounds as an educational resource or ‘Living Classroom where practical activities can be undertaken to implement the Curriculum formally and informally.  The development of Literacy and Numeracy skills within the Living Classroom will be a predominant theme throughout the course , which will also enable participants to work with their pupils to assess their school grounds and plan long term improvements.

There is a delicious homemade organic lunch every day demonstrating the link between growing, harvesting and cooking vegetables from the school organic garden.

We will explore upcycling, junk art, whole class wall displays, print making, sewing made simple, construction ideas, weaving and 3D clay projects to name just a few!

While we craft and create we will focus on the key messages of the Visual Arts curriculum including all 6 strands and strand units.

We will explore fresh ideas and doable projects that meet the aims and objectives of the Curriculum for each class level. The integration of literacy and numeracy in a manner that is unique to the arts will be explored.

The course will be presented by Anne Beechinor and Sheila Hoare, both experienced teachers with a particular love and interest in developing the arts in primary schools.

Presenter:                              GAA Games Development staff and tutors

This GAA Teacher Summer Course is a new blended course using the Association's new Learning and Development Community Portal available at www.learning.gaa.ie/. The face-to-face element runs over three days and approximately eight hours online training has to be completed thereafter. Being largely practical-based, it aims to introduce teachers to Gaelic games - hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, ladies Gaelic football, handball and rounders. The main objective of the courses is the advancement of teachers' pedagogical, teaching, learning and management skills in the context of the primary school Physical Education (PE) Curriculum. Furthermore participants will develop the ability to deliver elements of the PE curriculum through the medium of Gaelic games. An emphasis on numeracy and literacy programmes highlight the opportunity to integrate PE through a teaching curriculum by using the various resources developed by the GAA.
