Target Audience: Teachers in Primary Autism Classes

Planning and preparation in an autism class can seem difficult and overwhelming. These diverse classrooms often necessitate planning at several different curriculum levels in order to adequately cater to each child’s needs. Additionally teachers are required to support children with their Individual Education Goals, some of which may fall outside of the standard primary curriculum. The purpose of this training is to support teachers in making their recorded planning manageable and meaningful for their practice. Support will be delivered over the course of three hour long webinars.

Session 1: Recorded Planning Requirements in the Primary Autism Class - Wednesday 4th September @ 7 pm

Participants will

• Become familiar with the recorded preparation requirements in special classes
• Familiarise oneself with the recommendations of the NCSE and the NCCA for planning and preparation in special classes
• Identify the required and recommended information to be included in Student Support Plans (SSPs)

Session 2: Goal Setting and Long Term Planning in the Primary Autism Class - Wednesday 11th September @ 7 pm

Participants will

• Become acquainted with the GLD Curriculum Access Tool and other tools and frameworks that can support planning in an autism class
• Become confident in creating SMART targets for Student Support Plans (SSPs)
• Develop an understanding of how to adapt and implement existing whole school/long term plans in the autism class

Session 3: Short Term Planning in the Primary Autism Class - Wednesday 18th September @ 7 pm

• Identify how to create whole class plans that include effective differentiation for a wide variety of needs
• Analyse and compare different assessment strategies that can be used in the autism class
• Collaboratively create a written plan in a specified subject area for an autism class

Bio of Presenter: Karin White

Karin White is an experienced educator with 12 years teaching under her belt, she holds a permanent position at an Urban DEIS 1 primary school. For the past 7 years she has been dedicated to teaching in the school’s autism classes, spanning Early Intervention, middle primary and senior primary classes. Karin is advocate for neurodiversity affirming practice and always places her students and the centre of their own learning. In 2022, Karin successfully completed her Master’s in Special Educational Needs (SEN) with a focus on Autism in St. Angela’s College Sligo. Beyond her teaching role she is passionate about extending support to new teachers navigating the challenges of working in an autism class.
