 Morphology: An Underused but Critical Component in understanding (and teaching) English Spelling - A Series of Webinars run by DSI Specialists

Target Audience : All mainstream and SET primary teachers interested in a better understanding of the English spelling system and the implications for teaching spelling in a manner that not only impacts spelling ability but also develops vocabulary and reading comprehension. Relevant for pupils, with and without literacy difficulties, from first to sixth class and beyond.

Participants will

• learn how English orthography is shaped by phonology and morphology
• appreciate the influence etymology has on our spelling system
• become confident in helping pupils understand how words work – there is more to spelling than phonics and visual memory
• utilise some simple, but powerful, morphological teaching approaches
• become curious about words and get their pupils excited about spelling

Bio of Presenters: Tim Horgan & Lorna Murphy

Tim Horgan is a retired primary teacher who has recently completed a two-year specialist dyslexia course. His teaching experience included mainstream classes, learning support, special class, and administrative deputy principalship in a large urban primary school.

Lorna Murphy is a primary school teacher with a special interest in dyslexia who has completed an MEd in Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia). She has worked as a classroom teacher and special education teacher for a number of years. Currently Lorna is HSCL for a large urban school in Dublin.
