Target Audience: Primary teachers or principals who are adopting the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness programme to use in their classroom.
These webinars will provide an overview of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness programme. Heggerty comes in 3 levels: Pre-K, Kindergarten and Primary (Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class). Each level consists of daily lessons for the whole year, focusing on phonemic awareness skills. Each lesson takes approximately 10 minutes. Sample lessons for each level will be demonstrated.
Primary Language Curriculum, Reading Learning Outcome 4: “Through appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to play with, recognise and manipulate sounds such as syllables, rhyme, onset-rime and phonemes in spoken words.”

Deirdre O'Toole


Deirdre O’Toole is a Primary School Teacher who is currently studying for her PhD in Literacy Education. She is passionate about early literacy, child-led play and making the classroom a fun place for the children to learn. Deirdre runs the Instagram page ‘Playful Classroom’.
Lorraine Gannon


Lorraine Gannon is a Primary School Teacher with more than 10 years experience teaching infants. She has a passion for early literacy, and has recently gained a Masters in Early Years Education with Marino Institute of Education. Lorraine places huge emphasis on providing developmentally appropriate practice which builds solid foundations for future learning. She runs the Instagram page ‘All Things Primary’.
