This session for classroom staff encourages participants to consider the importance of supporting learners who use EAL to develop Standard English and academic English.  It introduces a range of strategies that teaching staff can implement immediately into their teaching and learning. 

The session looks at how learners using EAL can be supported to expand their range of vocabulary and structures and encourages participants to explore the specific language demands of different subjects.

Bio of Presenter: Sheila Hopkins

 

Sheila Hopkins has been with The Bell Foundation since 2020. She holds an MA in TESOL plus qualifications in primary education and EAL teaching.  She has worked as an EAL specialist in schools and as an EAL educator in initial teacher training and continued professional development courses at the university level in the United States. Her EAL work with The Bell Foundation focuses on initial teacher education, early career teachers and senior leaders.
