21TRA486 Getting the Concept - Supporting Understanding and Vocabulary Learning

From the perspective of a Speech and Language Therapist, how do we successfully teach vocabulary and concepts? How do we support understanding of curriculum language? What do teachers and SNAs need to know when supporting children with or without language difficulties? How do we maximise teaching concepts and vocabulary in a busy classroom?

The Irish curriculum builds on previous knowledge. This means difficulty with vocabulary and concepts at an early stage in the primary career have significant impacts at a later one. This one-hour workshop will enable you to identify and teach both simple and challenging vocabulary.

In this session we will cover:

  • Different types of vocabulary and concepts
  • Order of teaching
  • How to teach vocabulary and concepts
  • How to build on previous topics, concepts and vocabulary

Please note, we will not be discussing teaching concepts specific to the maths curriculum as this is a specific area that would require a specific session. However, the application of knowledge gained in the session will be applicable for maths.

The webinar is suitable for SNAs, class teachers, learning support teachers who work with primary school (Junior Infants up to 6th Class).
