The new Leaving Certificate Geography course is designed “to develop students’ understanding of the Earth and its people, their interest in and appreciation of the real-world significance of geography.”
This webinar will provide teachers with an overview of the course rationale, structure, and key learning outcomes. Participants will explore how the new specification fosters geographical thinking, critical analysis, enquiry-based learning, and problem-solving skills, empowering students to make evidence-based decisions and engage with complex global challenges.
Course Structure at a Glance:
Unifying Strand – Applying Geographical Thinking and Skills: Core concepts, enquiry skills, GIS, data interpretation, and the Applied Geography Project (AGP).
Strand 1 – The Physical Environment: Plate tectonics, the rock cycle, surface processes, weather, climate, and climate change.
Strand 2 – The Human Environment: Settlement, sustainable rural responses, urban growth, population, and migration.
Strand 3 – The Global Environment: Globalisation, development and cooperation, geopolitics, and the role of superpowers.
Whether you teach at ordinary or higher level, this session will equip you with insights into how the new course prepares students for understanding and responding to the pressing geographical issues of our time.
Bio of Presenter: Liam Maughan

Liam has been teaching Geography for over 25 years. He teaches geography in Coláiste Iognáid, Galway – a Jesuit-run city school known locally as “The Jes”. He is also an experienced Leaving Cert higher level geography examiner. Originally from County Mayo, he lives in Athenry, Co. Galway.
